We had another family party this weekend so I made my family’s Toffee Nut Squares. I have no idea where this recipe came from originally but it was always my sister’s fave growing up. So for the past 20 years, when we want to make these, we go to the church cookbook where the recipe is listed under my sister’s name. That’s as good of an original author as I’ve got, folks!
For the base:
Melt 1 stick of a butter in a bowl. Then add 1 package of dry yellow cake mix and 1 egg. Mix about a minute until well blended. Press in bottom of ungreased 13×9 pan and bake at 350 for 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, in same bowl combine 1 c. packed brown sugar, 1 tsp. vanilla and 2 eggs. Mix well. Then stir in 2 tbsp. flour, 1 tsp. baking powder and 1/2 tsp. salt. Stir in 1 c. chocolate chips and 1/2 c. chopped walnuts.
When crust is done baking, carefully spread topping evenly over warm base.
Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and topping is set.

@Natalie Absolutely you could use pecans, but I usually make them without nuts just b/c I'm cheap and they are still fabulous! And, yes, that cookie is still sitting on our counter (since last Thurs.!!!), because nobody can bring themselves to eat it!!

Oh my gosh, those look sooooo good! I'm allergic to walnuts...do you think I could substitute pecans?
And that cookie is so stinking funny! Hahaha! She must really love you!
