We all have talents in this world, right?? Mine is soooo not decorating.
I know what I like, but piecing it together is brain overload for me. It just never seems to look cohesive and I struggle BIG TIME with actually making a decision!
I mean like months upon months of agonizing over one simple decision until I don’t even care anymore. It can be torture living with me.
So I’m going to spare my husband this time (well, not really, because he’s already been hearing about this daily for a week), and turn to all of you lovely, talented readers!! (pull through for me here, will ya??)
Here is what my master bedroom looked like at the start of last week:
I was SO over it. The bedding and matching curtains are about 7 years old and haven’t been my style for a very long time. The walls used to be chocolate brown and for some reason, I liked the bedding more then. We painted it this pale blue last spring and I’ve despised it since- the bedding and the wall color. I knew as soon as I painted that first swatch, that it wasn’t the color I was going for. But I’m trying to make it work, because my husband is the BIGGEST sport for putting up with all my painting, and I’m not putting him through that again any time in the near future.
So that left me with switching the bedding as my option! I just got this gorgeous Nautica set last week and I LOVE IT!!
It is EXACTLY what I wanted and my husband loves it too! Score! I want to go with a nautical look in here, but not seashells and lighthouses type nautical. More retro bathing suits, funky signs and splashes of red.
But I’ve got a lot of work to do to get there! Did you notice that in addition to the bedding, the nightstands changed too?
This is where I need your help! I have 2 sets of nightstands right now, and I can’t decide which ones to use!
These honey-colored ones go with our bedroom set. BUT, it’s a 5-piece set and we are currently only using 1 dresser out of the whole set. The rest is all in our basement taking up storage space. I feel like I should just sell the whole thing as a set rather than trying to sell it piece by piece. Or does this finish go with our new bedding and I should keep them (which would mean I’m using 3 out of the 5 pieces)? I just feel like these nightstands are a bit too bulky for our tiny bedroom. Although, the extra storage is nice…
I also have 2 of these black nightstands that we’ve been using for the last couple weeks. I love how they open up the space more, are a little bit taller and just give it a little more character. But, I’m not convinced I like the black with the navy on the bedding. Even though a lot of the picture frames in the room are going to be black, and I do like the way that looks. We also lose the storage with these.
I was convinced I wanted white furniture in here, like this trunk, but my husband isn’t too sure of that. I don’t want to paint the honey-colored ones white (since they belong with the 5-piece set). And I’m scared to paint the black ones white (even though that’s the shape I want), because they’re a nice factory finish already.
Soooo…. question #1:
- Honey-colored nighstands that are bulky but have extra storage
- Black nightstands that are the size and shape I want, but no storage and not the right color
- White nightstands that I’d have to go find and purchase
And that brings us to the windows.
The windows with the glare so bright that I can’t get a decent picture at any time of day. Do I go with curtains again? I was thinking a white panel with maybe a thick, red border at the bottom. Or do I go with wooden blinds that would fit into the nautical look and then take all my curtain hardware down? The picture above the “headboard” isn’t staying there, so ignore that. I’m really stumped on the window treatment, and my husband would like this taken care of quickly!
Question #2:
- Curtains? If so, what color or style? Is this a place where I should be mixing patterns with the stripes on the bedding or should I go with solid curtains?
- Wooden blinds and no curtains?
Puh-lease help me!!
And one more beauty shot of my bedding, because I really do loooove it!

I love your bedroom makeover! I honestly like both end tables – maybe I like the darker ones a little better?
I like the smaller, black nightstands. They work better in the space and with the black picture frames it’ll bring black around the room as an accent color. The height works better as well.
I think black and navy will work just fine together and will keep the wall color from being too sweet. However, the storage issue is a problem unless you can work out something else. First and foremost, de-clutter the drawers and decide what you REALLY need to have beside your bed, then see where you could put the other stuff.
The white storage unit is a bit plain-can you add some color to it in some way? Stencil a design, paint a border, something to add color to the large white area on the front?
I would not go with solid colors on the curtains. If you go with curtains, the wide stripe is going to lend itself well to pattern mixing, so give it a shot!
I am all about the storage. I say keep the honey coloured night stands and find some honey coloured wood blinds. That should give your room a simple clean nautical look.
Please post a pic when you decide! Cheers,
Susan
Great new look Natalie! I’m too practical to agree to the open nightstands…..I’d have tons of “stuff” all over the floor – the honey with drawers is the way I’d go. Also knowing you need to be able to darken your room to sleep – I’d suggest going with valences- nautical emblems or at least wit ha little pop of red! That way you could continue to use your curtain rods at the top……and definitely Blinds.com white 2 inch blinds – not wood tho – they warp over time. They have great sales of Bali or Levelor all the time and they are fantastic to work with once you’ve measured your windows. We’ve used them all over both houses. But you’re really on to a great look – either way!
Like your makeover! Thoughts: Dark stands are “lighter” in terms of mass, therefore go nicely with the breezy style. You can put on ceramic, white w/old blackened-chrome knobs that give a hint to the white and/or the red (or go black/white only-tried to upload pix but could not). I’d stay away from kitschy nautical icon, however. Maybe simple thin-slat white shutters just inside the frame, unless they will obscure a super view. You cannot put the normal big ones in as they would fold too far onto headboard. The slates would offer lots of texture, but keep an eye to the bed and pillow.
Love the makeover! I can’t decide. My eye tells me the black, but I know I would need the storage. I am so bad at decorating so I can’t figure out what to tell you on the curtains/blinds. Good luck! Can’t wait to see what you decide.
I love the bedspread!!! I would paint the black nightstand white, and then take off the top of the trunk, flip it so it is vertical, add shelves, and then you have extra storage to use!
I love this bedding!! I would paint the honey nightstands and knobs blue – a shade between navy and royal blue. This will pull the blue from the bedding and make the room flow. I would move the rods up and add white curtains on ring clips or grommet tops so that they slide easily. You could add white faux wood horizontal blinds for extra light control if you’d like. The white curtains will reinforce the nautical look – think sails on sailboats. I think wood – honey or other stain would look too heavy in the room. Then I would just add more nautical artwork and decor later. A couple of glass table lamps to sit on the nightstands that you could fill with shells or white gourd lamps, with white shades, would look gorgeous too! Those are just some ideas but I love this makeover already!! New bedding is so fun!!
Love the way your room turned out! So bright and happy…yet peaceful and clean. Great job!
Love it Natalie! It looks so fresh and pretty!
I love the darker night stands. Just maybe one word on the windows…roman shades. Maybe in the same shade of dark blue? I think that might bring a more “beachy” flair to the room. Also agree that the trunk should not be stark white. But, what a nice canvass to make it your own. I may be of no help because I too am “decorator” challenged. I do love your bedroom. Good luck with whatever you choose.
Love this makeover! It would be great if you could share it at the A Little Bit of Everything Link Up Party at Mom Home Guide!
