This faux wood slat accent wall is for all Fixer Upper fans who love the rustic look of wood slats, but don’t want to damage your walls! Trust me, it’s a real, honest to goodness concern! No one dislikes patching holes more than me, and I can’t even imagine the 100s of holes I would have if I had done real wood on these walls!
Luckily for me, RoomMates Decor was happy to partner with me to show you how you can get this look and protect your walls at the same time! Not only that, but it’s affordable AND easy to install with a few easy tricks.
I used the Distressed Wood Peel and Stick Wallpaper for this project.
I showed you last week the before and afters of my stairway landing, but in case you’re just joining in now, this is what my landing looked like at the beginning of this month:
and this is what the exact same space looks like today:
I LOVE IT!! I seriously can’t tell you how much I love this space now! Be sure to check out the original reveal post for the paint color I used on the door, because that made such a huge impact too!
But today’s post is going to focus on the wall treatment, because it is definitely worthy of it’s own post!
Last month, I shared with you my office makeover where I added faux brick wallpaper to two accent walls. That brick wallpaper was also from RoomMates Decor and added so much depth and warmth to that room.
I shared a pretty detailed post on How to Apply Removable Wallpaper using this office as an example. I’m not going to reiterate everything I included in that post, so be sure to read it!
I do want to share, though, that depending on your preference for the which way the pattern runs, you might need to adjust your technique a little. For the brick wallpaper, there really is only one way that brick normally runs, so we ran our sheets from the ceiling down to the floor.
For the faux wood slat accent wall, you could run it the same way, but then your slats would also be running vertically because of how they’re printed on the wallpaper. I wanted my slats to be running horizontally, so I needed to run my wallpaper side to side rather than from floor to ceiling.
I actually found it easier to work this way. The pieces were smaller and more manageable, especially since I was working alone for most of this. I still pre-cut them the way I showed in the tutorial post. And, yes, I did remove the outlet cover when I applied this strip, I’m just impatient and added it back on right away before moving to the next strip!
Then I just worked my way up the wall! You can see on the right-hand door trim that I leave an overhang when I pre-cut my pieces. That’s trimmed easily with an exacto knife.
Once I got to the tops of the door frames and needed a piece that stretched the full width of the wall, I had to call in reinforcements. It’s just too much for me to manage holding that long piece, lining it up perfectly and trying to smooth out bubbles while I remove the backing!
Fortunately, I have a willing helper who enjoys trimming the edges!
And because everyone loves beauty shots, here’s another angle of what we started with…
And just how much it completely transformed this space!
I really just can’t get over it! And neither can anyone who sees it in person! My mom was here while I was still halfway done, and she still asked if it was real wood or not! I had some friends over the other night, and everyone always has to reach out and touch it!
It especially looks amazing when you’re standing at the bottom of the stairs looking up at it! So much more impactful than the plain white walls that used to greet people! And absolutely no damage to your walls! You just pull it off if you need to!
I know I mentioned it repeatedly in the tutorial post, but I really want to stress the need for a plastic scraper and to be patient. If you lay the full piece of wallpaper down at once… you will get bubbles and air pockets. If you take your time and work from one side, smoothing it with the scraper as you go… you will be much happier with the overall results!
I used the Distressed Wood Peel and Stick Wallpaper for this project. I needed 3 rolls, but we had TONS of leftover pieces. Probably a full roll of leftover pieces if not more. We just needed the 3 full rolls because of matching up the pattern in some of the spots. That just leaves you more for other projects!
And guess what?? I just checked the RoomMates Decor site and there is very often promo codes listed right on the front page! Be sure to check to see what their current sale is!
