DIY Halloween Costumes for the Whole Family

Sharing is caring!

I’m the mean mom who refuses to spend obscene amounts of money on a Halloween costume that we wear once maybe twice.  And not just that, but that we’re wearing in the dark and tripping and scuffing (do I have the clumsiest kids ever??), and getting all sticky with candy fingers.  Nope, I just can’t bring myself to do it.

So we normally make ours.  There have been a few times that I’ve let them buy something cheap, but we normally make them.  And we make them last-minute and for very little money! Now we’re talking my style.

So let’s take you on a little walk down Halloween Memory Lane.

This was probably my favorite year ever for their costumes!  My son was some cartoon character (I think Adventure Time).  My cousin made him the felt hat, I bought him a blue t-shirt and he had the book bag in his closet!  Done!

My daughter is obsessed with Chinese Food and really wanted to go as a take-out container.  I used a poster board from The Dollar Tree that I taped around a box and then just used a red marker to free-hand everything.  We even put some chopsticks through her hair for the added effect.  There’s more details in this post.  This costume was a HUGE hit in the neighborhood! She had trouble getting up some of the stairs, but people loved it and were all exclaiming over it!

I’m telling you right now, if you want to get extra candy on Halloween, go as a toilet!  Better yet, put a bag inside the toilet seat for the candy to go in and rig the handle so it makes a flushable noise, and I’m telling you, people will be throwing candy at you!

This costume was another favorite of ours, but we have to give all the credit to our friends who made it!  We just borrowed it and added the bag inside the toilet seat!  (I told you I like easy costumes!)

Oh Beamo.   I still don’t really get this character or why my son likes him, but the costume was cheap and fast.  Grab a large box, a $1 plastic tablecloth and some posterboard and you’re good to go.  It’s as simple as it looks.

A little adult humor is always good on Halloween!  My husband was a beer pong table with a piece of poster board and red Solo cups glued to it.  I was frantic and had about 10 minutes to pull a costume together before a party we were heading to, so I threw on some white clothes, grabbed some garbage from our trash cans and pinned it to me and went as White Trash!

And one of my favorite costumes of all time (or at least the 15 years we’ve been together)…

God’s Gift to Women!!

Look at him… he looks like he’s standing in a trophy case with a spotlight shining on him!  It cracks me up every time I see it!

This was a $1 bike bag from the Dollar Tree, a bow and a piece of posterboard that I cut to look like a gift tag!

I LOVE the toilet costume. How clever! I am also making some costumes at home. I just can't fathom paying that much for something I can make myself. I did have to give in and buy a Cinderella costume, though I wasn't too thrilled. Oh well! Anyway, I love your costume ideas!
